Where are people moving to from Los Angeles and where are people moving to Los Angeles coming from? Today, we are going to delve into it!

So we’re talking about where Californians are moving to and where they are coming from right now. Now it’s a question I get asked quite frequently so I thought it would be fun to delve into some of the numbers. So in 2022, according to the census, 340,000 Californians left the state. I actually believe that number is probably more on the low side, but that’s what the census stated. 340,000 Californians left the Golden State.

Now obviously there are a lot of reasons why: you got your high taxes, lack of housing, lack of affordable housing, just to name a few, right? I think we can all come up with different reasons why people might want to leave the state.

So for those looking to move out of the state, where did they go to? And for those making a move from Los Angeles County not everybody actually left the state. In fact, the top five places people moved to were Orange County, followed by San Bernardino and Riverside County so the Inland Empire, and then came Clark County which includes Las Vegas, and Ventura County at number five.

So I know a lot of people think that everybody just leaves the state of California when you move, but you still have a lot of people moving around Southern California which actually I think surprises a lot of people because people still really enjoy everything that California does have to offer. Yes, California has a lot of problems. It’s not a perfect state but you know you can’t beat the weather most of the time. I’m shooting this video in early March and I’m wearing a short sleeved T-shirt. So you can’t do that in a lot of parts of the country right now. Again, even though people might be exiting Los Angeles County, they’re still sticking relatively close by. They’re not necessarily moving out of state.

Allied moving issued a report of where people were moving to from Los Angeles County out of state. And the top five areas that people were moving to out of state. Number five, Seattle Bellevue Area up in the northwest in the state of Washington. And then number four, New York. So people moving to the greater New York City area. Number three, this one doesn’t surprise us at all cause we have a lot of clients that constantly move out there and that is Phoenix, the Valley of the Sun, which really makes sense with the proximity to the state of California. Number two is a place where we seem to always send a lot of clients over the last few years and that is to the capital of Texas, Austin, Texas. We have a lot of clients that like moving out to Austin. And number one, also happens to be in the Lone Star State, Dallas, Texas.

Where are people coming from out of state and moving to Los Angeles? Well, that’s a really good question. So I started looking into the numbers and out of the top five counties that are sending people from out of state to Los Angeles, three of them are actually very close to one another and it kind of makes sense. So three of the top five counties that are sending people from out of state to Los Angeles, you have New York County, you have Kings County which incorporates Brooklyn, and you have Queens County. So pretty much that New York City and surrounding areas overall area is sending a lot of people from that area to here in Southern California. I mean, you can’t blame them if you look at the weather that we have here in the winter.

So the other two out of the top five those include San Francisco County, and actually coming at a number two was Cooks County which is Chicago and the surrounding suburbs of Chicago. We just sold a listing not too long ago where someone actually came from Chicago. So that gives you an idea of where people are coming from, where people are moving to right now, those current trends.
